Clare Mount Specialist Sports College

ASD and MLD Secondary

Clare Mount Specialist Sports College is a community special school for pupils aged 11-19. All pupils have a Statement of Special Educational Needs or an Education Health and Care Plan with primary needs of Moderate Learning Difficulties, Autism, Speech Language and Communication Needs or Complex Difficulties. Pupils follow a differentiated and modified National Curriculum, personalised to meet individual needs.
Clare Mount was the first secondary school in Wirral Local Authority to be awarded Accredited status by the National Autistic Society in 2014. Pupils with Autism as their primary need begin their time at Clare Mount in specially designed base classrooms with quiet areas, a learning support area, and a therapeutic sensory room next door. Their transition, which was highly praised by NAS, begins with most of their teaching in the base area and only when pupils are ready do they begin to move to specialist teachers and classrooms and follow a secondary school model. We have recently secured funding for a Sensory Garden and hope to have this project developing over the next year with help and ideas from our pupils.

Pupils with Moderate Learning Difficulties all benefit from a highly structured, calm but stimulating environment created to enable everyone to reach their potential. Clare Mount students all make excellent progress whatever their starting point, and specialist staff are experts at removing barriers to education experienced by pupils with a wide range of difficulties. We support personal, social and academic development, maximise independence, and promote the acquisition of life skills to enhance the success of our students when they leave us.

We are now developing an outreach service at Clare Mount to support other schools on Wirral with our knowledge and expertise.
